One of the most frequently asked questions we get asked is “How do I pack for DTS?”
Packing lists are helpful, but we decided we wanted to make this an experience to remember, rather than a chore to forget.
Two of our YWAM Newcastle staff members, Michael Cooke and Meg Kemp, show us some valuable tips to keep in mind when packing for a Discipleship Training School! This will walk you through step by step, giving you guidance to pack just right for DTS!

Luggage:What you take here you will take with you on outreach. We recommend bring a backpacker/hiker’s backpack, and a day backpack.Regardless on your choice of luggage, it needs to be something that is easy for you to handle.Because of this, we recommend you take a maximum of 15kg (33lbs) in a hiker’s pack, plus your day backpack/carry on or be prepared to give anything more away before leaving on outreach. It is also important to note most flights from Australia (such as to outreach) have a one bag check-in limit of 23 kgs.
Keep it simple – bring enough clothes for an average of only 8 or so days and wash regularly.
To maximize your clothes, choose ones that are easy to mix and match to switch up your look.
Bring/buy smaller bottled/bottles for toiletries for outreach and while in Newcastle go halves with someone if you buy a larger item.
Where it is an item you don’t need that much for your entire time, share it!E.g. your laundry detergent, sunscreen, and insect repellant.
You can buy things here – we are in walking distance to the shops and your school staff will probably organise to take those that want to go in the first couple of days.
If you are too stressed by it, build friendships here with those in the community and ask one of them if they might be able to store something for you while you are away on outreach.
