I look at my bright blue, pristine hiking pack and know that I am going to be taking it with me into the Australian Outback, Cambodia and other parts of South East Asia. I also have to somehow pack everything I could possibly need into it; for all of the circumstances I could possibly find myself in.
If we go rural in Cambodia and do manual labour for a small village, I’m going to need; sturdy shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent and perhaps I should take iodine because their water isn’t so good.
If we go play with the street children in Phnom Penh, I’m going to need; lice treatment, tissues and a soccer ball. In the schools, I’ll need prepared skits, grammar notes, colouring pencils, and a translator.
If we go into the red light district, I’m going to need…
When I stop and look beyond the circumstances that I will find myself in and see the people, I know that my hiking pack isn’t enough. The real preparation for this adventure is not the practicalities of what to pack, nor learning the language and culture, even though these will make an impact.
The real preparation needed is in our hearts.
On DTS we’ve been taught countless truths that can completely transform our lives if we let them. We know that God speaks to us and we can HEAR Him. We know that He is a just and compassionate God, that He died on the cross in our place and that we are forgiven. All true. The next step means taking these truths from our heads and cementing them into our hearts. We want to know God more, and to share His truth with the world.
I know in my heart that I am made in the image of God. I am chosen and adopted by my Father. I am called to a destiny, for a purpose. I am forgiven and set free by the sacrifice of my Lord, Jesus Christ. I am empowered to follow Him every day by the Holy Spirit. I am no longer reciting tired, religious knowledge but proclaiming truth from my heart.
Now I see what I really need in my hiking pack. I’m going to need a Bible, to cut down the lies of the enemy in the lives of those we meet and in our own. I’m going to need faith to keep His truth in my heart and to step out for Him. I’m going to need all the love that He has poured into my heart to overflow in villages, on street children, in schools and in the red light districts. I see God’s truth coming out of my team already through their actions and I know we are all on this transforming journey together.
God has prepared our hearts for this adventure.
