Set Free from Addictions – East Timor Update

By YWAM Newcastle on June 6, 2013 in Discipleship Training Schools, Outreach

Cigarettes and Coffee are two of East Timor’s most prized possessions. It is so pervasive that you start feeling weird if you don’t smoke. A man we connected with over the past week was a part of this ever growing nation wide addiction. Anton has been struggling with smoking for years and recently he’s been trying to kick the addiction. It was proving impossible for him, until the Holy Spirit decided to intervene.

We felt led to pray for some of the young believers in Seurtulan – the village we were just in. Anton was the final person to be prayed for and, in this case, the best was saved for last. God unleashed his Spirit on Anton. Almost immediately, he began to lose his balance and our whole team had to hold him up so that he didn’t collapse onto the dirt floor.

It was amazing to witness a grown man blown over by the Spirit.

Our team was blessed and excited by that alone. A few days later Anton shared with us that after his first encounter with the Holy Spirit his nicotine cravings had vanished. Not only did he no longer have an urge to smoke, but he was repulsed by even the smell of it.

It was beautiful to watch this mans face light up as he spoke of how Gods glory had ignited healing within him.

His story spoke hope into the lives of everyone around him who struggles with that same addiction, revealing to them that God is eager to release them from whatever has a tight grip on their lives.

Our God is moving swiftly through this country and His love for all people is bursting at the seams.

With one week to go we’re eager to see what God has in store. It’s gonna be wild.
